Supporting the largest car manufacturer in the world for 15 years.
The background
TMUK (Toyota Motor Manfacturing UK) operates 2 factories in UK, just outside Derby and in Deeside, with a total of 3500 staff and agency workers known as Members.
As well as being the world’s largest car manufacturer by volume, they’re also one of our original clients from our time as part of the University of Derby.
Over the course of our 15-year collaboration, TMUK have constantly pushed the boundaries in making their learner engagement process as easy as possible, removing any barriers to accessing development activities.
The challenge
For the latest phase of the collaboration in 2024, the initial focus was on how we could help get TMUK’s face-to-face offer online and scaled to reach larger numbers through our bespoke e-learning development capabilities. But this quickly evolved into the launching a more efficient way of implementing the Annual Online Appraisal and Technical Skills Assessments to capture data on training gaps/needs.
The delivery
With the existing widespread use of the paper-based Appraisal and Skills Assessment Forms, it was clear we needed to totally bespoke the new online versions to retain that level of familiarity, a key factor in ensuring take-up of learning technology interventions.
Alongside scalability, efficiency and familiarity, the final key driver for how the project was designed was ease of access. This led to the decision to implement single-sign-on, removing another possible barrier to take-up.
The results
The collaboration established 15 years ago is still going strong and each year new or improved functionality is added to the learning platform. We’ve recently rebuilt the Course Booking process to allow for all Team Leaders and Team Members to be booked onto training sessions, so the platform is now being accessed by approximately 3500 users – almost the entire workforce.
The verdict
“I have personally worked with Scott for over 10 years and we have built great rapport over the time. He is used to my last minute requests and as a company they always deliver in a timely manner.”

The future
TMUK are always looking for small Kaizen efficiencies, so our work for them never stands still. After 15 years of collaboration we have now come full circle and in early autumn 2024, we will be launching a new set of e-learning courses and e-guides.
The final word goes to Heather who adds:
“I appreciate their flexibility …creating a system which is both user friendly and meets the business needs.”
