TL;DR

A good manager leads to a happy team, and a productive organisation. But many new managers have no experience or training for the role so it’s no surprise that they struggle.

Help! I’m not sure the managers and team leaders in my organisation are very efficient. What can I do about it?

This is a very common problem within many organisations. Employees are often promoted to senior/management roles when somebody else leaves, and the assumption is made that they will ‘naturally’ fall into their new role and adapt to the challenges and responsibilities required to be a good manager.

This is not always the case.

Louise S, who works for a large organisation, describes her experience:

“I used to work for an organisation where good communication was a real strong point. Since moving to my new company, I’ve been shocked at how my manager doesn’t offer me any support. She rarely replies to my emails, let alone Teams messages. When I am in the office, she barely speaks to me. I find it difficult to ask for help. I would like my manager to make time for me and others in my team. My morale is at rock bottom and I am thinking of leaving the company because of this.”

Employees who are promoted to leadership roles often feel like they haven’t received adequate training and don’t know how to offer their support to their team members.

In a 2023 survey of more than 4500 employees and managers by the Chartered Management Institute, it emerged that 82% of people promoted to management roles had no proper training – a phenomenon known as ‘accidental managers’. In addition, around 30% of people reported that they had left a job in the past because of dissatisfaction with their manager.

These are startling figures and give leaders – and HR staff – a strong motivation to reflect on their own organisations.

Don’t assume that the managers in your organisation don’t need support or training.
